This is regarding the scholarships provided by the Virginia Environmental Endowment (VEE) BoardThis update overrides the information currently contained in our Handbook (released Summer 2015).

On October 1, 2015, the VEE Board of Directors met and made the following decisions on how VJAS is to administer the VEE Scholarships:
  • Students may continue to apply for both the Lewis and MacKenzie Scholarships with a single application packet. However, effective immediately, a student who previously received or is awarded either the Lewis or MacKenzie scholarship is no longer eligible to receive the other scholarship in the current year or in any subsequent year. This change is effective beginning with the 2016 Research Symposium and Annual Meeting at UMW.
  • The Frances and Sydney Lewis Environmental Science Scholarship will be reduced from $14,000 to $5,000. The 2016 Research Symposium's award will be the last $14,000 scholarship. The reduced scholarship amount goes into effect starting 2017 Research Symposium. All other aspects of the scholarship will remain the same.

A huge thank you to all schools, teachers/sponsors, and students for submission of papers by the February 24th deadline! We are no longer accepting papers for the May 2016 Symposium as we have already finished the initial screening process. Please read below for more information!

A panel of Readers across the state of Virginia are currently evaluating all VJAS Research Papers received from students at VJAS School Members and VJAS Individual Members by the February 24, 2016 submission deadline. Student School Sponsors at VJAS Member Schools and parents of VJAS Individual members may begin looking on the web site (www.vjas.org) beginning early April for the lists of VJAS papers that have been accepted for oral presentation at the 2016 Research Symposium at UMW. Keep in mind that in does take some time to generate the list for each middle school and each high school category. Acceptance lists will be made available ASAP after the results of the Reader Evaluation have been received and processed.
  • At this point and until the end of the 2016 Research Symposium, we are not able to answer any questions about specific papers and why they were or were not accepted. We take great care in processing the papers submitted for evaluation for our Research Symposium in May. During the receipt, screening and reading of papers and the preparation of the acceptance lists, we check and double-check our work at each step with multiple people. Unfortunately, as in any such competition, we cannot accept all of the entries.
  • At the conclusion of the 2016 Research Symposium, all of the Reader's Evaluation Forms, all presented papers with the Judge's Evaluation Forms and other relevant material will be returned to VJAS School Sponsors and to the parents of VJAS Individual Members. Pickup time and location will be provided in the program for the 2016 VJAS Research Symposium and Annual Meeting (which will be available in electronic format on the VJAS website prior to the meeting and also distributed in print format at check-in at UMW.

Update 10/4/2015
The new VJAS Website is live! The content is still being uploaded and the website organization is still in flux but we have the most important documents up and running (namely the new 2015-2016 VJAS Handbook and Appendix). Please expect this site to constantly update over the next few weeks as we add additional content (including moving over items from the old site) and may see some reorganization of tabs and links. Completed forms can be saved without loss of entered data.

Each school's VJAS School Number will be provided in the Certification Letter that will be emailed to the Head Sponsor of each VJAS Member School upon receipt of the School's VJAS School Membership Application and School Membership Fee payment for 2015-2016.


Any schools with students and teachers who plan to participate in the 2016 VJAS Research Symposium and have not yet joined VJAS as School Members should join VJAS very soon so that they can receive their VJAS School Numbers for 2015-2016 prior to the February 24 deadline for VJAS Paper Submission.

Executive Officer for the Virginia Academy of Science, Richmond, VA
Academy seeks a part-time, skilled manager to run the daily operations. Salary is limited to $11,000 per year with no insurance benefits, etc. Activities per year will fluctuate between 30 hours per week for a few weeks in the Spring, to less than 20 hours per week during most months. Office is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, and usual presence is required. A criminal background check is required because the EO will have access to state email systems.

Required: Bachelor’s Degree, experience in business operations and personnel management, budget management, and proficiency with the Microsoft Office software and email.

Preferred: experience with Quicken software, fund raising experience, basic webmaster skills.
